Media Statement | Edgar Legoale Foundation Statement on Human Rights Day | 21 March 2025

As we commemorate Human Rights Day, we reflect on the sacrifices made in the fight for equality, justice, and dignity. This day is deeply rooted in the events of 21 March 1960, when peaceful demonstrators in Sharpeville stood against the oppressive pass laws, only to be met with brutality. Their courage was not in vain—it laid the foundation for the freedoms we cherish today. On this day, 69 people were killed, and 180 others were injured in the tragic events that unfolded. Over 50 years later, we remember this tragedy as a pivotal moment in the struggle for human rights.
However, as we observe this day, we are reminded that the fight for human rights is far from over. According to recent statistics, over 700 million people worldwide still live in extreme poverty, and millions are denied access to basic human rights such as education, healthcare, and clean water. These statistics highlight that the work to protect and promote human rights is ongoing.
At the Edgar Legoale Foundation, we believe that human rights are more than just words in the Constitution; they must be lived experiences for all. Our work is a testament to this commitment, ensuring that youth and vulnerable communities receive the education, empowerment, and support they need to thrive. Through our programs, we strive to uphold the basic human rights of dignity, opportunity, and well-being.
Our Commitment to Human Rights in Action
We recognise that access to education, mental wellness, and opportunities for personal development are fundamental to ensuring that human rights are upheld in every community we serve. Our key initiatives include:
● School Shoes Initiative – Providing proper footwear to underprivileged children so that they can attend school with dignity and confidence.
● Edgar Legoale Easter Soccer Tournament – Using sports as a tool for youth development, community engagement, and a drug-free lifestyle.
● Mental Health Awareness & Support – Recognising mental well-being as a fundamental human right, we provide resources and advocacy for emotional resilience and support for young people.
● Tumahole Heritage Project – Preserving and celebrating history and culture as a means of fostering identity, pride, and social cohesion.
Mental Health as a Human Right
The conversation around human rights is incomplete without addressing mental health. The pressures faced by young people—from academic struggles to socio-economic challenges—can severely impact their well-being. At the Edgar Legoale Foundation, we strongly believe that mental health is not a privilege but a right. We are committed to breaking the stigma, advocating for mental health literacy, and providing safe spaces for youth to seek help.
A Call to Action
Human Rights Day is not just about remembrance—it is about action. We call upon individuals, organisations, and stakeholders to stand with us in ensuring that human rights are actively upheld. Let us work together to create a world where every child has access to education, every young person has the opportunity to reach their full potential, and every individual is treated with dignity and respect.
