The Edgar Legoale Foundation proudly commemorates Tumahole Day, honouring the courage, resilience and sacrifice of the people of Tumahole who stood united against injustice during the historic events of 15 July 1984.

Tumahole Day serves as a powerful reminder of a defining chapter in our nation’s struggle for freedom, dignity and equality. The events of 1984 did not emerge in isolation, but were the result of growing frustrations within the community. Earlier that year, the Orange-Free State Development Board imposed a significant rent increase on council houses, raising costs from R26.25 to R37. For many families already burdened by unemployment and economic hardship, this decision became the tipping point.

In response, residents of Tumahole supported by students, civic organisations and community leaders mobilised in protest. Structures such as the Tumahole Civic Association and the Tumahole Students Organisation (TSO) played a critical role in organising resistance and raising awareness. What began as a local grievance soon evolved into a powerful community-led movement grounded in unity, dignity and the demand for justice.

On 15 July 1984, more than 30 000 residents marched in protest, carrying placards that reflected both their frustrations and their hopes for a better future. Despite facing intimidation, arrests and repression, the people of Tumahole remained resolute. The rent boycott and protests became one of the most significant grassroots struggles in the Orange Free State, later inspiring similar actions across the region and demonstrating the power of collective action.

As we reflect on this historic uprising, we are reminded that the values of unity, courage and active citizenship remain as relevant today as they were over four decades ago. The legacy of Tumahole continues to inspire us to confront present-day challenges with determination, while working together to build inclusive and empowered communities.

As part of preserving this rich history, the Edgar Legoale Foundation continues to advance the Tumahole Heritage Project an initiative dedicated to documenting, preserving and sharing the stories, experiences and contributions of those who participated in the 1984 rent boycott and related struggles. Through this project, we aim to ensure that the voices and memories of Tumahole’s heroes remain alive and accessible for future generations.

In honour of Tumahole Day, the Foundation will be hosting Tumahole Month celebrations in collaboration with primary and high schools across Parys. These engagements will focus on educating young people about local history, promoting active citizenship, and inspiring a new generation of leaders grounded in the values of resilience, unity and service.

In addition, the Foundation will host a Gala Dinner to honour the Spiritual Leaders of Tumahole, recognising their enduring role in guiding, supporting and uplifting the community through times of struggle and transformation. Their moral leadership has been instrumental in fostering hope, unity and social cohesion within the community.

Through education, community empowerment and ethical leadership, we can continue building a future defined by dignity, opportunity and unity,” said the Chairperson, Mr Edgar Legoale.
